Serowe is the capital of the Ngwato area and best known for its woodcarvings. It is one of the largest and most interesting settlements in Botswana. Serowe has about 60,000 inhabitants.

The Khama III Memorial Museum has an exhibition on the history of the Khama family. The grave of Khama III is marked by the Ngwato totem and lies on the Royal Cemetery atop Thathaganyana Hill close to the remains of an 11th century village.
