Eastern China's Shandong province can easily be found on maps, as it includes the peninsula of Shandong Bandao, which sticks out into the Yellow Sea like a sort of turtle head. Shandong is a relatively poor province. The area has several severe problems, of which the regular floods caused by the Yellow River are the worse. Overpopulation is also taking its toll on the province's resources.
The problems have always existed and in 1895 they were one of the reasons of the so-called Boxer uprising against the British.
There are several interesting places to visit in Shandong, which include Linzhi, Qufu, Mount Taishan and Zibo.
