Shemakha

Shemakha was the capital of the Shirvan shahs from the 6th century until it was moved to Baku. It was also the area's main trading center, but after Baku became the capital, Shemakha's importance declined. The Shirvan used to bury their royals in the Eddi Gyumbez Mausoleum (Mausoleum of Seven Cupolas).

One of the oldest buildings in town is the Djuma Mosque. It was built in the 10th century and despite numerous earthquakes that have hit the region over the centuries, it has survived marvelously. The region around Shemakha is also known for its wine and carpet industry.

The is little accommodation in town. Shemakha is 130 km (80 miles) west of Baku.
