Shillong is the picturesque colonial capital of the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is an old hill station with a very wet climate; during British times it was notorious for being called 'Scotland of the East'. There are excellent view over the mountains from several parts of town.
Interesting sights include the All Saints' Cathedral and the State Museum, where examples of local flora, fauna, culture and anthropology are exhibited. Gravestones of the raj's victims that are buried in Shillong, bear inscriptions like 'killed in an earthquake' or 'murdered by headhunters', to obscure the facts.
Not far from town are several nice waterfalls and from the 1960 m high summit of Shillong Peak there are good views over the area.
Hotels and restaurants are available in town. Shillong is 1485 km east of Delhi.
