The Slovak Karst is a region dotted with limestone canyons and caves. It sits at the eastern end of the Slovak Red Mountains that stretch all the way to the border with Hungary. One of the Karst's major attractions is the huge Domica Cave, one of the largest caves in the world. The cave is also known as the 'Gothic House' and nearly 2 km (1.2 miles) of its total of 5 km (3 miles) is accessible by boat. The water in the cave is the underground river Styx. Domica Cave boasts marvelous stalagmites and stalactites.
Another highlight in the Slovak Karst is the Zádielska canyon, not far from the Hungarian border. It is more than 2 km (1.2 miles) long and hemmed in by cliffs that rise up to 250 m (820 feet) on either side. Mountain climbers use the cliffs for practicing their skills.
The best place to stay, if you want to explore the Slovak Karst, is the mining town of Rozhnava.
