Thaba Bosiu

The mountain stronghold of Thaba Bosiu, which was built by King Moshoeshoe I, is 15 km (9 miles) east of Maseru. Thaba Bosiu means 'mountain at night'.

It was first occupied in July 1824 and it is Lesotho's most important historical site. You can see the ruined fortifications and there is a small visitor center at the base of the mountain. Thaba Bosiu is also the location of the Qiloane pinnacle that was the main source of inspiration for the shape of the Basotho hat. The views over Maseru from the site are fantastic, as it lies high up the mountain ridge. Because of this location it never fell in the hands of the enemy, although it was almost continuously under attack for four decades.

You can get there by minibus from Maseru, although it is also possible to walk there.
