The Terai

The Terai includes the entire south of Nepal and is one of the most fascinating areas in the country. The region consists of hot, subtropical plains and includes the Royal Chitwan National Park, which was once used as the hunting ground for British and Nepalese aristocrats. It is home to numerous animal species.

One of the most interesting cities in Terai is Janakpur, although the towns of Devghat and Lumbini are also very beautiful and well worth a visit. Lumbini has been confirmed to be the birthplace of Buddha.

It is possible to fly into the Terai region, but most people prefer the bus, as it is much cheaper and more interesting, as you can see Nepal's beautiful landscapes. Buses are often overcrowded though, so if you have more money to spend, you might consider hiring a car. It is also possible to explore the region on mountain-bike.
