The atoll of Woleai consists of 22 islets and that are some of Yap's outer islands. At low tide you can walk to most of them, as the sand bars that join them fall dry. It boasts marvelous beaches and friendly people that live a traditional lifestyle. Canoes are favored over motorboats and the people have certain rules, which prevents them from wearing Western-style clothing, such as T-shirts, pants and baseball caps. Tourists are exempt from clothing regulations, but it is a good idea to adapt to the locals and get yourself a traditional dress. You will find the people are more interested in you after you show them respect in that way.
There is limited accommodation on Woleai, but places to camp, or homestays can usually be arranged. You can get to Woleai by boat (very slow) or plane from Yap Atoll. You'll need a permit from the Special Assistant for Outer Islands Affairs in Colonia, on Yap Atoll, in order to be able to visit Woleai. Make your request at least a month before your planned visit. The Woleai Atoll is 1610 km west of Palikir.
