Zagória

© noheadimg

Zagória is a remote mountainous area in the northwest of Greece, straddling the border with Albania. There are numerous small villages in the area and because of its remoteness; even during Turkish times most of the villages remained quite independent. As a result the people in the area maintained a great deal of their original habits and culture and even nowadays most villages in Zagória look as they were hundred years ago.

Zagória is excellent for hiking, especially the Vikos-Aoös Vikos Gorge National Park attracts a lot of trekkers. The mountains are covered with forests and animals such as bears, wild boars, wild cats, wild goats and wolves, as well as the Rissos quadrupeds live in the area. You might also run into flocks of sheep and goats herded by semi-nomadic Vlach or Sarakatsani shepherds.
