Zermatt

Zermatt is a skiing and mountaineering resort that is dominated by the 4478 m high Matterhorn peak. Zermatt is very popular with skiers, as it offers almost year-round skiing possibilities. The runs in the area total over 200 km. Other visit the town for its beautiful location amid mountains that provide excellent views.

A popular trip is to take the cogwheel railway to Gornergrat, from where you'll have fantastic views of the Matterhorn. Zermatt itself is easily explored on foot especially, as the town is car-free. In the Hinter Dorf district are numerous traditional tumbledown wooden Valais houses. On Zermatt's cemetery are countless graves of people who did not survive their attempts to climb the Matterhorn and Mount Rosa.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Zermatt. The town is 55 km south of Bern, not far from the Italian border.
