Zilina's history dates back to 20,000 BC, evidenced by stone tools that were found not far from town. Most people visit the city for its thermal springs, others to use it as a base to visit the nearby Malá Fatra National Park. The local Povazske Museum has good exhibitions of the city's (tinkering) history.

Zilina is a pleasant, but somewhat industrial center and sits at the confluence of the Rajcanka, Kysuca and Vah Rivers, some 170 km northeast of Bratislava.
