Manaus is a good place to stay if you want to explore the Amazon jungle. The city lies on the Rio Negro, some 10 km (6 miles) upstream from the place where it congregates with the Solimões and Negro rivers, that later join to form the Río Amazon.
There is little of interest in Manaus. Maybe the 1896 Renaissance style Teatro Amazonas opera house that was designed by Domenico de Angelis, is worth a visit, but otherwise Manaus is only a jumping off point for excursions into the jungle.
Boat trips up the Amazon River are available in town. It gives you a chance to experience the enormous variety of wildlife in the Amazonas and there are also possibilities to see how the caboclos, the inhabitants of the Amazonian river towns, live.
There are many hotels and restaurants in Manaus. The city is 1950 km northwest of Brasília.
