The Península de Pedernales in the southernmost part of the Dominican Republic includes three marvelous national parks, countless beautiful beaches and some of the finest scenery in the Dominican Republic. Despite of this, the area receives very few tourists and only committed independent travelers will make it to the peninsula.
Barahona is the major urban center in the region.
Nearby is the Reserva Científica Laguna Rincón (Corner Lagoon Scientific Reserve), where the largest freshwater lagoon in the Dominican Republic is studied and protected. In the lagoon live Florida flamingos, Hispaniolan freshwater slider turtles, Louisiana herons, and plenty of endemic water plants to ogle.
Some of the national parks on the peninsula include Jaragua National Park, Sierra de Bahoruca National Park and Isla Cabritos National Park.
